Sugaring 101

Why should I stop waxing and start sugaring?

Sugaring

An ancient Egyptian hair removal treatment that has been practiced for centuries using a combination of sugar, lemon and water to remove hair without pulling at the skin.

Sugaring is often compared to waxing but aside from removing unwanted hair, that is where the comparison ends.

Sugaring removes hair in the same direction of hair growth which is less painful than extracting hair in the opposite direction of growth. Wax pulls the hair in the opposite direction which can cause hair breakage and produces “stubble”. The hair is known to grow back faster with this standard waxing technique. It is this action that causes irritation., rashes and ingrown hairs and proves to be quite painful.

Sugaring paste is 100% NATURAL with absolutely no chemicals or resins. It is applied with a gloved hand and therefore, there is never any “double dipping” in to the sugar pot. When sugaring, only a small amount of sugar is required to successfully remove hair from the body. This same amount of sugar is repeatedly manipulated by the hand and applied to the next area. By using this technique, we never have to dip back into the sugar pot. Wax is full of resins and because strips and/or spatulas are used, it is likely you will risk contamination of the wax pot.

Sugar paste will never burn your delicate skin. It is lukewarm and never hot. Wax can both bruise and burn your skin. Sugar does not stick to live skin cells and therefore is gentle enough to be used on the vellus hairs of a woman’s face and other most delicate parts. Wax adheres to the skin and causes redness, pain and irritation. Sugar paste is water soluble and easy to clean up if it flicks onto clothing – it also does not allow bacteria to grow or survive. The same is not true of wax.

FAQ’s

How long does my hair have to be?

For us to be able to extract the hair, the length must be at least 1/8” which is roughly the length of a grain of rice. Most women reach this length of hair after 2-3 weeks of growth. Extracting the hair at 1/8” will lead to permanency. Longer hair may need to be trimmed to prevent unnecessary pain while applying the sugar. Please allow us to do the trimming for you so we can make certain the length is ideal.

Does sugaring cause ingrown hairs?

No. Ingrown hairs are often caused by lack of exfoliation, improper skin care, and hair growing over the mouth of the follicle. Sucre Body Sugaring practitioners use the proper pre and post extraction care to ensure the best results of the treated area. Combined with proper knowledge on pre and post care, Sucre is confident we will help you prevent ingrown hairs from reoccurring.

What does Sucré recommend for pre, post and in between treatment care?

Pre-care instructions:

a) Please do not suntan for 24 hours before your appointment. If you have a sunburn, we are unable to sugar that area of your skin

b) Please be sure your skin is clean and dry, avoiding any lotions, oils, perfumes or powders.

c) Please do not exfoliate the day before, the day of or the day after a sugaring treatment. During the sugaring process, the sugar paste itself will exfoliate your skin, which will leave your skin soft and supple

Post and in-between treatments:

a) Always moisturize your skin, everyday! Please use a water-based lotion as this will help keep your skin hydrated and prevent ingrown hairs.

b) Treat yourself to a warm bath in Alexandria Professionals Dead Sea Salts, which we of course send home as a complementary gift to each of our first time clients who visit us\

c) Exfoliation is key to preventing dry skin which can lead to ingrown hairs. A good skin care routine includes gently exfoliating 3 times a week.

Does sugaring hurt?

If this is your first time sugaring and you have been previously using a razor, your first treatment will be the most uncomfortable. This is due to the fact that the hair’s shaft’s bulb at the base of the hair is enlarged. The more sugaring treatments you receive from us, the easier it becomes to remove the hair because these roots will become weaker. After your very first treatment, you will noticed the hair that grows back will be softer and finer. After a few months of sugaring, you will notice spots where no hair growth is present. It is here that you will witness the beginning stages of permanency through sugaring.
